ACHIEVEMENTS
THE PAGOSA HUTS PROJECT The Pagosa Hut and Trail System is located on 50 square miles of the San Juan National Forest, a few miles west of the Town of Pagosa Springs. When completed, it will consist of four Huts and 75 miles of Trails. All huts will be available to non-motorized as well as motorized users. One hut has been built at Turkey Springs. The major trails connecting the huts have been completed. Some additional trail construction is planned to further separate user types. The purpose of the Pagosa Huts Project is to build the last three huts in the system. Start of construction was mid summer of 2003, and completion of the last hut is planned for 2005. Most of the construction will be by volunteers and youth. It is estimated that the total out of pocket cost of a single hut will be $35,000. New huts will be located at Hotz Springs, Monument Park and Devil Mtn. The huts will be constructed by the Pagosa Area Trails Council in partnership with the US Forest Service, Pagosa Ranger District. The Pagosa Area Trails Council is a 501c3 organization. The Pagosa Hut and Trail System is different from most of the other Hut Systems in Colorado.
